Courses taken in Eighth Grade

Dear Eligibility Coach:

My son completed Algebra I in the eighth grade. He took Algebra I and Geometry in high school. The NCAA requires three maths. Does he have to take another math class?

Dear Parent:

It depends. The NCAA Eligibility Center requires three math courses at the Algebra I level or higher. Your son has completed two high school math courses. If his high school transcript lists the Algebra I course from the eighth grade then he will have the three required math courses. However, if his high school transcript does not list the eighth grade course, your son will need to enroll in an additional math course for NCAA purposes. Check with your son’s high school guidance counselor for clarification.

You will also need to check with the individual universities where your son plans to apply for admissions as

some of those universities may require additional math courses as well.
